Monte delle Formiche

Between the valley of the Idice river and that of the Zena stream lies Monte delle Formiche (Mount of the Ants), whose name is linked to a strange phenomenon that occurs here every year around 8 September.

We are in the territory of Pianoro, a town in the Bolognese Apennines. At 638 metres above sea level, Monte delle Formiche (Mount of the Ants) is the highest peak in the Pianoro area and a destination for nature lovers. At its foot is the ruin of the Zena Castle, bombed during the Second World War as the headquarters of a German commando.

The Sanctuary of Monte delle Formiche (Mount of the Ants) stands right on the summit. This is a sacred place of ancient origin that was rebuilt in 1957 after being damaged during the war, which offers a wonderful view of the surrounding valleys.

The nuptial flight of winged ants

A very special event takes place every year near the sanctuary, which has given the mountain its name. On 8 September or on the days before or after depending on weather conditions, a large black swarm of winged ants from central Europe comes here to mate. Immediately after mating, the ants inexplicably drop dead all together in the area of the shrine.

Having not yet found a scientific justification, the phenomenon has been hailed since ancient times as miraculous and considered a gift of nature to the Virgin Mary. Moreover, according to popular legend, these insects have the power to ward off certain diseases, which is why they are blessed and then distributed among the faithful, wrapped in a paper packet.
